Abstract

The objective of the study was to determine the effect of reading children’s stories in relation to the development of concepts concerning the printed word, and reading behaviors, on preschool children from a school in Pasto, Colombia. The method included types and techniques of quantitative and qualitative research within two groups: one experimental and one control group. Each of the groups consisted of 6 children between the ages of 5 and 6 years old. The results indicated that the reading behaviors most apparent in the experimental group was: the notion of the story and the handling of the parts of the book. Also, the development of several reading behaviors was observed in the majority of the children. At the same time, children in the control group only showed improvement in the identification of letters and words, as well as capital letters. Finally, evidence concerning awareness of the printed word in the environment had similar non-significant results in the pre-test and post-test results of the two groups.
